SITUATION:
‘next gen’ national survey May 2025
RCP ‘next gen’ survey: fewer than half of resident doctors surveyed are satisfied with their clinical training

•Failure to prepare for the future: training does not consistently equip doctors with the leadership, digital or risk-management skills required for modern consultant roles.
•Generalist training reform needed: the balance between generalist and specialist training needs a new vision, with doctors learning a broader set of skills that will help them to lead multiprofessional teams in planned specialist and community-based care.
BACKGROUND:

BEYOND THE SCALPEL, a component of INSPIRE, was outlined by Mr Umar Rehman, UKPRC President, Clinical Research Fellow, University College London: Professor Peter Brennan, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Queen Alexandra Hospital; and Mr Simon Filson, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Guy’s and St. Thomas Hospital.
Added to the INSPIRE programme in 2026, the module aims to enhance career preparedness and develop transferable professional skills, including human factors, leadership, innovation, and patient-centred problem solving.

INSPIRE is a first-of-its-kind mentorship programme, with results published in JPRAS.

BEYOND THE SCALPEL was commissoned by PolyNovo Limited
